S7797 - Tobii Eye-Tracked Foveated Rendering for VR and Desktop

Session Description

Effective eye-tracked foveated rendering (ETFR) requires low latency but can itself contribute to a reduction in latency in a virtuous circle. Using multi-res shading and other techniques, processing cost reductions can exceed 50% with virtually no perceptible drop in final image quality. We'll present on (1) an overview of system latency, eye tracking latency, and their interaction, (2) a discussion of various aspects of ETFR including: physiology; latency reduction; implementation details and options; challenges. [3] a brief overview of how the implementation details of existing rendering systems influence implementation costs and options for ETFR with particular reference to the simple forward rendering case and the challenges of deferred rendering.
