S7772 - Stretchable Transducers for Haptic Communication in Virtual and Augmented Reality

Session Description

Explore how the tools of soft robotics enable more immersive haptic experiences in augmented and virtual reality. Using fluidic elastomer actuators (FEAs), we demonstrate a soft skin that can provide high degree of freedom force feedback to a motion tracked controller. Additionally, we present soft controller that uses the variable compliance of these soft structures to simulate different textures and materials. The shape-shifting controllers enabled by these technologies will allow us to interact with digital objects using the same sense of touch we use for physical matter.
